Clouds
It's that time of year again; the ozone hole is opening over the South Pole. People in Antarctica need no special instruments to know this is happening. They can tell just by looking at the sky:

"These are Type II Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSCs) over Australia's Mawson station in Antarctica," says Andrew Klekociuk of Australia's Antarctic Division. "This type of cloud is intimately associated with the formation of the ozone hole, which is currently reaching peak size."

The coronal hole on the sun responsible for this activity is a broad one, which means the solar wind could blow unabated for days. NOAA forecasters estimate a 10% chance of geomagnetic storms during the next 24 hours; high-latitude sky watchers should remain alert for auroras.

In this view, objects in direct orbits (most of the objects in this plot) move counterclockwise and the vernal equinox is towards the right. (The equinox directions are the direction of the sun as seen from the earth.)

A few nights ago in northern Canada, the sky lit up with vivid green auroras. There was no particular reason. Photographer Sylvain Serre of Salluit, Quebec, lives under Earth's auroral oval where the slightest shift of solar wind can spark a midnight display like this:
